Ori's Choice is a project that consists of guided exhibitions, performances, panel discussions and seminars which examine the concept of ‘Ori’, a Yoruba spiritual term for the head. It explores parallels between the origin and history of the transatlantic slave trade, historic systems of control, and the emerging ethical dilemmas posed by artificial intelligence (AI).
This exhibition delves into the question of whether Artificial Intelligence would evolve into either a heinous slave master or a benevolent, diligent servant of humanity, perhaps depending on what we make of it and how we navigate this budding age of abundance.
Is it Karma time, or can we borrow from history and avoid repeating the mistake of underestimating the calamitous impact of Transatlantic trade, which continues to rage to this day?
Rooted in Yoruba metaphysics and the Benin Kingdom’s early interactions with Europe, “Ori’s Choice” will question whether AI will become a new master—or an emancipatory servant—depending on how humanity chooses to shape it.
This project invites us to a critical rethinking of our collegial heritage and privilege, and to interrogate our past in the light of current development, so that by learning from it, we aim to provoke new ways of thinking about artificial intelligence and what it means for freedom, identity and a common, wealthy future.
