A Synergy of 3 Civilizations: Exploring the Complex Historical Relationship Between the British, Yorubas & Benin

A Synergy of 3 Civilisations: The British, Yorubas & Benin is a Royal Borough of Greenwich funded project which consists of guided exhibitions, lectures and panel discussions will explore the cultural richness and the complex historical relationship between the British, Yoruba and Benin empires. It highlights the complex historical relationship between the British, Yoruba and Benin cultures, revealing how a common trade relationship has led to slavery, colonization and how a century-long acculturation of the British culture have developed.

The project aims to promote and foster inclusivity by exploring how the cultural diversity of the populace in the United Kingdom can serve as an avenue towards creating mutual learning and appreciation of the historical and cultural diversities of our communities to foster a more progressive borough. It reveals current cultural differences and how individual cultural richness can be harnessed towards creating an inclusive society of mutual learning and appreciation of one another towards communal welfare and progress. This work highlights some historical subjects of these cultural synergy under the following topics:

 

Who are the Yorubas ?

The Edos (Benin)

Slavery

Colonization

Independence

The project will highlight in the form of exhibitions, seminars and panel discussions, the relationships between British and Nigeria culture and how this can influence relationship and a mutual development of both enities , both in the United Kingdom and in Nigeria . The event is divided into guided exhibition, talks, cultural displays and panel discussion.

 

Through this project, we aim to promote and foster inclusivity through an exploration of how the cultural diversity of our communities can be harnessed as an avenue towards creating mutual learning and appreciation of a more progressive society.
